Woman of the week: Aparna Das Sadhukhan

Real women follow their heart, and they do it in style. That’s why this Woman’s Wednesday, we’re featuring Aparna Das Sadhukhan – an inspiring woman who dared to quit her full-time job to follow her passion in fashion.

After spending close to a decade dabbling in various fields, Aparna realized that she was meant for bigger things. “Frequent jumps between jobs only made it evident that I was looking for something else,” she says. “I quit my job and moved to Sydney. There I explored various aspects about myself – passions that I had always thought of pursuing but never did.”

“A chance class in silversmithing and a further need to fund my own classes in Sydney Art School is what made Nine By Thirty happen,” she says. Aparna’s brand ‘Nine By Thirty’ is all about hand-made jewellery made of silver and gems. This eclectic silver store started off primarily as an online store and soon began to go places. “Over the last 3 years I’ve managed to sell online, through shows and exhibitions.”

When asked about her inspiration, Aparna tells us, “Inspiraton can be anything at all.  It could be a poem I read, a photograph I saw, a person I met, a colour that stayed with me, a word I fell in love with.  All it needs to do is stir something in me.”

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Aparna. “Initially I had trouble with capital, and then came the challenge to reach out to a completely foreign audience.”

To people who are keen to turn their interest into businesses, she says, “All you need is passion and the belief to make it happen. Listen to your instincts and just follow your path with confidence and sheer faith.  Then nothing can stop you.”
